14 Indian Ships Stuck In Hormuz After Iranian Shelling, MEA Takes Step For Safe Passage (X)
New Delhi: The ongoing tensions in the Middle East have also affected the movement of Indian cargo ships. This has increased concerns about India's maritime security. The firing on Indian ships in the Strait of Hormuz, which is one the world's most important sea routes, has exacerbated the situation. And about 14 Indian ships are still stranded there.
At least 14 Indian ships are currently stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, including large oil and gas vessels. India has previously rescued several ships, but efforts are now being intensified to free the remaining vessels. The Navy is in constant contact with these ships and is advising them to remain safe.
According to reports, on April 18, two Indian-flagged ships were fired upon by soldiers of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) near the Strait of Hormuz.
As per media reports, the incident occurred due to lack of coordination between Iranian authorities and local IRGC units. Fortunately, no major damage was caused to any ships but some sections reported shattered glass panes during the incident.
The Indian government took this matter very seriously and immediately took diplomatic action. India summoned the Iranian ambassador, expressing its strong objection to the incident, and made it clear that the safety of Indian ships must be ensured at all costs.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri met with the Iranian envoy to express India's concerns. He stated that the safety of Indian ships transiting this route is of utmost importance.
Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India is in constant contact with Iranian authorities and efforts are underway to ensure safe passage for the ships.
